Cool Facts
Crow-sized flyer. Confuciusornis was about the size of a modern crow and lived during the Early Cretaceous Period in what is now China, around 125 to 120 million years ago.
Smart beak choice. Unlike many of its dinosaur cousins, Confuciusornis had a toothless beak like today's birds, which made it better at eating seeds and small prey without the weight of heavy teeth.
Named after a philosopher. Scientists named this dinosaur after Confucius, the famous Chinese thinker, to honor the country where these incredible fossils were discovered.
Incredibly common fossil. Confuciusornis is one of the most abundant dinosaurs ever found, with several hundred complete skeletons discovered in the Yixian Formation of China, making it a star of paleontology.
Beaks evolved separately. Interestingly, Confuciusornis lost its teeth independently from modern birds, meaning different dinosaur lineages figured out that toothless beaks were a great idea.
