Cool Facts
Designs every outfit. Costume designers create all the clothes, hats, shoes, and accessories that actors wear on stage or in front of the camera. They think carefully about colors, textures, and styles to make each character feel real and true to the story.
Works with the whole team. Costume designers collaborate with directors, lighting designers, and set designers to make sure everything looks perfect together. They also work with hair stylists and makeup artists to create a complete look for each character.
Tells stories through clothes. The clothes a costume designer chooses help the audience understand who a character is and what time period or world they live in. A tattered coat tells a very different story than a fancy ball gown.
Different in different places. In European theaters, costume designers often do even more work, sometimes designing both the costumes AND the scenery for a production.
