Royal entertainers. Jesters were special performers who lived in the homes of kings, queens, and nobles. Their main job was to make people laugh during fancy parties and celebrations with jokes, silly dances, and funny tricks.

Permission to joke. Jesters could say funny or clever things about the king that ordinary people could never say without getting in trouble. This made them special because they could make fun of important people in a way that made everyone laugh instead of getting angry.

Traveling performers. Not all jesters worked for royal courts. Many jesters traveled from town to town, performing at fairs and markets to entertain regular people who gathered to watch them juggle, tell jokes, and do funny acts.

Jesters worldwide. Funny performers who acted like jesters weren't just in Europe. Ancient Rome, China, Persia, and even the Aztec Empire all had jester-like entertainers who used humor and clever tricks to make their audiences happy.

Still performing today. The tradition of jester performance continues in modern times at historical festivals, Renaissance fairs, and theme parks where people dress up and entertain crowds with comedy and stunts just like jesters did hundreds of years ago.
