Skilled cattle herders. Cowboys work on ranches to take care of large herds of cattle, often riding horses across wide open land to move and protect the animals. They do many different jobs around the ranch beyond just herding.

Spanish and Mexican roots. The cowboys we know from American history actually came from vaquero traditions in northern Mexico, which themselves came from Spanish settlers in a place called Andalusia. This means the cowboy tradition is hundreds of years old and blends different cultures together.

Wranglers and horses. Some cowboys specialize as wranglers, which means they focus specifically on managing the horses that help herd cattle. These cowboys need to be expert riders and horse handlers.

Rodeo stars. Beyond regular ranch work, many cowboys participate in rodeos, which are exciting competitions where they show off their skills in riding, roping, and other cattle-handling abilities.

Cowboys and cowgirls. While cowboys were more famous in history, cowgirls started working on ranches in the late 1800s and do the exact same skilled work, though their stories weren't always written down as much.
