Grid and clues. A crossword has a grid of black and white squares with numbers marking where words start. Each number connects to a clue that helps you figure out what word goes there.

Across and down. Words go horizontally (across) and vertically (down), and they overlap at shared letters. This means when you solve one word, it helps you figure out the crossing words.
