Crow's Nest

High perch advantage. The crow's nest sits way up on the main mast of a ship, giving lookouts the highest vantage point possible to see far across the ocean using their eyes or telescopes.

Spotting danger early. Sailors in the crow's nest could warn the rest of the ship about approaching hazards like rocks, reefs, storms, or enemy vessels long before anyone on deck could see them.

Optical tools helped. Lookouts used telescopes and binoculars from the crow's nest to spot things even farther away, making the view of the horizon much clearer and more detailed.

Not the ship's top. People sometimes confuse the crow's nest with the top, which is a different platform that sits on each lower mast of square-rigged sailing ships.
