Cool Facts
British invention. Crumpets come from the United Kingdom and are made from a simple batter of flour, water or milk, and yeast.
Full of holes. When you cook a crumpet on a griddle, tiny bubbles form all over the top, creating lots of little holes that soak up melted butter and jam beautifully.
Cooked on a griddle. Unlike bread baked in an oven, crumpets are cooked on a flat, hot griddle surface, which gives them their special spongy texture.
Around the world. While crumpets started in Britain, they became popular in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and South Africa too.
Toast and top. The best way to eat a crumpet is to toast it so it gets crispy on the outside, then pile on butter, jam, honey, or even cheese.
