A spice blend. Curry powder is a mixture of different spices combined together, inspired by the Indian spice blend called garam masala. Each blend can taste different depending on which spices are mixed in.
From Indian merchants. Indian merchants first sold curry powder to British traders during the time when Britain ruled India, called the British Raj. This helped spread the flavor to Britain.
First sold in London. The very first curry powder product sold in a shop was made by Sorlie's Perfumery in London in 1784. That's over 240 years ago!
Famous brand names. Popular brands like Crosse & Blackwell and Sharwood's started selling curry powder in the 1700s and 1800s. These same brands are still around today.
