Cool Facts
Feathers everywhere. Birds are the only animals with feathers, which keep them warm, help them fly, and come in amazing colors and patterns. A bird's feathers are lighter than its bones.
Hollow superhero skeleton. Bird bones are super light and strong because they are hollow like straws inside, which helps them fly without weighing too much. Their skeleton is so clever that it keeps features from their dinosaur ancestors.
Hard-shelled eggs. Instead of live babies, birds lay eggs with hard shells that protect the growing chick inside. Most birds sit on their eggs to keep them warm until they hatch.
Living dinosaurs. Scientists discovered that birds ARE actually dinosaurs, just a type that kept evolving over millions of years. Birds are the only dinosaurs that survived to today.
Everywhere on Earth. There are over 11,000 species of birds living on every continent, from tiny bee hummingbirds that are only 5.5 centimeters long to giant ostriches that stand 2.8 meters tall.
