Thick paint layers. With impasto, artists don't thin their paint down. Instead, they apply it so thickly that when it dries, it sticks out from the canvas like little hills of color. You can actually feel the bumps if you touch the finished painting.

Visible brushstrokes. The whole point of impasto is that you can see exactly how the artist moved their brush or knife across the canvas. Those swirling marks and thick streaks become part of the artwork itself, not something hidden under smooth paint.

Right on the canvas. Artists using impasto often mix their colors directly on the canvas instead of on a palette first. This lets them blend colors and create textures in real time as they paint.

Creates real texture. Because the paint sticks out from the surface, impasto paintings have actual texture you can see from the side. Light hits those bumps differently, making the painting look even more interesting and alive.
