Renaissance game-changer. Donatello lived during the Renaissance, a time when artists looked back to ancient Greece and Rome for inspiration. He became one of the most important sculptors of this period, helping to transform how people made and thought about art.

David statue breakthrough. Donatello created a bronze statue of David that was the first freestanding nude male sculpture made since ancient Roman times. This was a huge deal because artists hadn't dared to create full-size naked statues for over a thousand years.

Traveled and taught. Donatello didn't just stay in Florence. He traveled to Rome, Padua, and Siena to work on special commissions and teach other artists the techniques he invented, spreading his revolutionary style all across Italy.

Medici's favorite artist. The powerful Medici family, who ruled Florence, loved Donatello's work so much they hired him for many projects, including his famous David statue. Their support helped him become rich and famous.

Studied the ancients. Donatello spent time carefully studying classical sculptures from ancient times. He used what he learned to create his own original style that mixed ancient ideas with fresh, new approaches.
