The Band Leader. A drum major stands at the front of a marching band and tells all the musicians what to play, when to play it, and how loud to play it. They are like the conductor of a moving orchestra.

Special Outfit. Drum majors wear fancier clothes than the other band members, often with extra decorations or medals. This helps everyone spot them easily at the front of the parade or performance.

Four Ways to Command. A drum major can give orders using a baton (a stick they wave), a whistle, hand gestures, or even a ceremonial mace (a fancy staff). Different signals tell the band different things to do.

Keeping Time. The drum major's main job is making sure every single musician stays in time and marches in the right direction. Without them, the band would look messy and sound chaotic.

Dynamic Control. The drum major controls how soft or loud the music gets by raising or lowering their baton and using different hand movements. This makes the performance sound powerful or gentle exactly when it should.
