Nut Planters. Eastern gray squirrels bury thousands of acorns and nuts each fall to eat later, but they forget where they hid many of them. These forgotten nuts sprout into new oak, hickory, and other trees, making squirrels one of nature's most important forest builders.

Forest Regenerators. In their native eastern North America, gray squirrels are the most important animals for replanting forests naturally. A single squirrel can plant hundreds of trees without even trying.

Worldwide Travelers. Humans brought eastern gray squirrels to Europe, South Africa, and other continents. In those places, they became invasive species that crowd out local squirrels and damage ecosystems.

Problem Solvers. These squirrels are incredibly intelligent and can figure out puzzles, remember locations of hundreds of food caches, and even use tools. They have excellent memories but deliberately forget some caches so they can surprise themselves with food finds.

Bushy Tail Balance. A gray squirrel's fluffy tail is about as long as its body and helps it balance while running on thin tree branches. It also uses its tail as a blanket in winter and as a parachute when jumping between trees.
