Rule by shoguns. The Tokugawa family and about 300 regional lords called daimyo governed Japan together during this time. They created a system that kept the country stable and peaceful after centuries of warfare.

Arts flourished. With peace came amazing creativity. Japanese people created beautiful theater, poetry, paintings, woodblock prints, and traditional crafts that are still admired today.

Closed doors. Japan deliberately cut itself off from most foreign contact, which meant very few outsiders could visit and very few Japanese could leave. This isolation actually helped Japan develop its own unique culture.

Cities grew fast. Safe, peaceful conditions meant towns and cities expanded rapidly, with more people opening shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues than ever before.

Strict social classes. Society was organized into clear groups: samurai warriors at the top, then merchants, craftspeople, and farmers below them, with everyone knowing their role and responsibilities.
