Built for adventure. Galleons were huge multi-decked sailing ships that first appeared in the early 1500s in Spain and Portugal. They were designed by taking ideas from earlier ships called caravels and carracks and making them bigger and stronger.
Cargo and cannons. These amazing ships could carry lots of treasure and supplies across the ocean while also being armed with cannons to defend themselves. They were perfect for both trading and fighting during the Age of Sail.
Warship champions. For over 100 years, galleons were the most important warships that countries like Spain and Portugal used in naval battles. Even when navies started building different types of ships, galleons remained powerful and respected on the seas.
Explorer favorites. Galleons were the ships that Europeans used to explore new lands and oceans from the 1600s through the 1700s. Their strength and size made them perfect for long voyages across dangerous waters.
