Roman Britain

A massive takeover. In 43 AD, the Roman army invaded Britain under Emperor Claudius and conquered a huge portion of the island. This began one of the longest periods of Roman rule outside Italy itself.

Roads everywhere. The Romans built incredible stone roads that crisscrossed the land, making it easier to move soldiers, goods, and people. Many of these ancient roads are still used today.

New cities arose. Romans created towns and cities like London, Bath, and York, complete with temples, shops, markets, and public baths. These settlements introduced the Britons to Roman-style living.

Nearly 400 years long. Roman control lasted from 43 AD until around 410 AD, when Rome withdrew its soldiers to defend the empire back home. This gave Roman Britain enough time to deeply shape the people and the land.

Fighting for control. The Romans faced fierce resistance from Celtic tribes, especially under a warrior queen named Boudicca, but eventually brought most of Britain under Roman rule.
