Antler-shaped branches. Elkhorn coral gets its name because its branches look just like elk antlers spreading out in all directions. These branches can grow 5 to 10 centimeters taller every single year, making it one of the fastest-growing corals around.

Reef city builder. The branching structure of elkhorn coral is like an underwater apartment building. Fish, shrimp, sea urchins, and countless other reef creatures live in and around these branches, using them for shelter and hunting grounds.

Two ways to make babies. Elkhorn coral can reproduce by releasing eggs and sperm into the water like most corals do, but it much prefers a faster method called fragmentation. When a branch breaks off, it can grow into a brand new coral colony all by itself.

Struggling in the Caribbean. Although elkhorn coral was once super common throughout Caribbean reefs, it has faced tough times from disease and warming ocean water. Scientists are now working hard to protect and restore populations of this important reef builder.
