Turning secrets into scrambled code. Encryption takes a normal message (called plaintext) and uses special math rules to turn it into a jumbled code (called ciphertext) that looks like nonsense to anyone who doesn't have the key to unlock it.
Only the right key works. The person who receives an encrypted message needs a special key or password to decode it back to the original message. Without the right key, even if someone steals the encrypted message, they can't read it.
Keeps private messages private. When you send messages online, encryption makes sure that snoopers, hackers, or other people trying to spy can't understand what you're saying even if they manage to intercept it.
Doesn't stop interference. Encryption doesn't prevent someone from grabbing your encrypted message, but it does make sure that message looks like complete gibberish to them instead of readable information.
Protecting banks and phones. Banks use encryption to protect your money, and your phone uses it to keep your photos and texts safe from hackers who might try to break in.
