Cool Facts
Only in one spot. An endemic species is found naturally in just one location on Earth, like a island, mountain, or country. If that animal or plant lived in other places too, it wouldn't be endemic anymore.
Real-life example. The Cape sugarbird lives only in a small area of southwestern South Africa and nowhere else in the world. That makes it endemic to that special corner of the planet.
Not the same as native. A native animal might live in your country, but if it also lives in other countries, it's still native to yours but not endemic. Endemic means it's found ONLY in that one place.
Super vulnerable. Endemic species are at risk because they have nowhere else to go if their home gets damaged or the weather changes. All their eggs are in one basket, so to speak.
Scientists call them endemites. Scientists sometimes use the fancy word endemite to describe these exclusive species in scientific papers and research.
