The magic speed. Escape velocity is the minimum speed needed to launch an object from a planet or star so it breaks free from that body's gravity and never falls back down. Think of it like throwing a ball so hard that Earth's gravity can never pull it back.
Different for every world. Each planet, moon, and star has its own escape velocity because they have different amounts of gravity. Earth's escape velocity is about 25,000 miles per hour, while the Moon's is much slower at just 5,400 miles per hour because the Moon is smaller and less heavy.
No engines needed. Escape velocity assumes an object is launched straight up with no help from rocket engines or propulsion after that moment. Once something reaches that speed, gravity alone cannot pull it back down, no matter how far away it travels.
Invisible around black holes. Black holes have such extreme gravity that their escape velocity exceeds the speed of light, which is the fastest speed in the universe. This means nothing, not even light itself, can escape from inside a black hole.
A math superpower. Scientists use escape velocity to calculate how much fuel rockets need to reach space, how satellites orbit planets, and even whether asteroids will stay in space or crash back to Earth.
