Cool Facts
EU Doesn't Decide. The European Union doesn't pick holidays for the 27 countries that belong to it. Each country gets to choose its own public holidays based on its history, religion, and traditions.
EU Staff Get Holidays. Even though the EU doesn't set holidays for member states, it does set official holidays for people who work at European Commission offices and other EU institutions.
Different Everywhere. This means Christmas might be a public holiday in one EU country on one date and celebrated differently in another. Each nation respects its own calendar and what matters most to its people.
Local Independence. Letting each country choose its own holidays respects their freedom and unique histories. It's one way the EU balances being unified while letting member states stay true to themselves.
