Cool Facts
What is it?. An exchange rate tells you how much of one country's currency you need to swap for another country's currency. If one US dollar equals 100 Japanese yen, that's the exchange rate between those two currencies.
Why it matters. When people travel, businesses trade goods, or companies invest in other countries, they need to exchange money. Exchange rates help everyone know exactly how much money they're getting in a fair trade.
Rates change daily. Exchange rates go up and down all the time, just like the price of toys or video games at a store. If more people want US dollars, the dollar becomes more valuable and the rate changes.
Who sets them?. Banks, traders, and financial markets around the world determine exchange rates by buying and selling currencies. Some countries' governments can influence their own currency's value through special rules.
Real-world example. If you travel from the USA to Mexico, you'd exchange your US dollars for Mexican pesos at the airport. The exchange rate shows you how many pesos you get for each dollar.
