Cool Facts
Three Main Disciplines. Figure skaters compete in three styles: singles (one skater), pairs (two skaters together), and ice dance (partners moving as one to music, like a waltz on ice).
Judges Score Everything. Judges watch for technical difficulty, how well skaters execute their moves, and how beautifully they perform their routines to earn points.
Winter Olympic Star. Figure skating has been part of the Winter Olympics since 1908, making it one of the oldest winter sports in the Games.
Incredible Acrobatics. Top skaters can jump several feet in the air, spin at super-fast speeds, and land perfectly without falling, all while gliding on thin blades.
Athletes from Everywhere. Figure skaters train and compete around the world, from icy rinks in Canada and Russia to training centers in Japan and the United States.
