Flat ribbon shape. Fettuccine is a wide, flat noodle about 6.5 millimeters across, making it thicker and wider than many other types of pasta. This flat shape helps it catch creamy sauces beautifully.
Made with eggs. Traditional fettuccine is made from just two simple ingredients: flour and eggs. This gives it a rich, golden color and silky texture that you won't find in all pasta.
From Rome. Fettuccine is a pasta that comes from Roman cuisine in Italy, where people have been making and eating it for centuries. It's one of the most loved pasta shapes in Italian cooking.
Renaissance history. Fettuccine didn't just appear out of nowhere. It descended from a super thin pasta called capelli d'angelo, which means angel hair in Italian, that was popular during the Renaissance.
Cousin to tagliatelle. Fettuccine is very similar to tagliatelle, another ribbon pasta from Bologna. Both are flat and egg-based, though tagliatelle is slightly thinner than fettuccine.
