Totally One of a Kind. No two people in the world have the exact same fingerprints, not even identical twins. Your fingerprints are as unique as your name, and they stay the same your whole life long.

Moisture and Grease. When you touch something, the natural oils and sweat on your skin leave an invisible fingerprint behind. This happens on glass, metal, and lots of other smooth surfaces you handle every day.

Detective's Best Friend. Police and detectives use fingerprints found at crime scenes to identify people and solve mysteries. By comparing a fingerprint left behind with records of known fingerprints, they can track down suspects.

Ridges and Patterns. Your fingerprints have wavy lines called friction ridges that help you grip things better. These same ridges create patterns like loops, whorls, and arches that make each person's prints special.

Ink and Records. Police departments keep fingerprint records by pressing your fingers in ink and making prints on paper. Hospitals and governments also use fingerprints to identify people and keep records organized.
