Firefly Squid

Glows in the dark. The firefly squid has special light organs all over its body that create a stunning bioluminescent display. When it lights up, it looks like thousands of tiny fireflies dancing in the deep sea.

Super tiny but mighty. These squids are one of the smallest squid species, growing to only about 3 inches long. Despite their small size, they're famous throughout Japan and celebrated with festivals.

Deep ocean home. Firefly squids live in the Western Pacific Ocean near Japan, in very deep, dark waters where hardly any sunlight reaches. They come closer to the surface at night to hunt for food.

Nature's light show. When many firefly squids gather together, their glowing bodies create an incredible underwater fireworks display called the "squid run" or "hotaru-ika" season. This happens in spring off the coast of Japan and attracts thousands of tourists.

Edible delicacy. In Japan, firefly squid are caught and eaten as a special food, often grilled or served fresh. Their unique taste and the way they glow make them a prized ingredient in Japanese cuisine.
