Super bright star. Fomalhaut is the brightest star in the constellation Piscis Austrinus, the Southern Fish, and one of the brightest stars visible from Earth.

25 light-years away. This star is about 25 light-years from our Sun, which means the light you see from it today started traveling to Earth 25 years ago.

The measuring stick star. Since 1943, scientists have used Fomalhaut's spectrum as a reference point to figure out what other stars are made of and how they should be classified.

A type A star. Fomalhaut is a class A star on the main sequence, which means it's a medium-sized, hot star that's still steadily burning fuel in its core.
