Rules guide play. Game mechanics are the instructions and systems that tell you what you can do in a game and what happens next. Without mechanics, a game would just be ideas floating around with no way to actually play it.

Building blocks of games. Each mechanic is like a puzzle piece, such as how the knight moves in an L-shape in chess or how you roll dice to move in a board game. These individual pieces fit together to create the whole game experience.

Designed to hook players. Game designers spend lots of time creating and testing mechanics specifically to make their games fun and keep you wanting to play more. The best mechanics make you feel challenged but not frustrated.

Games use them all. Every single game you play, from checkers to video games to hide-and-seek, has mechanics underneath that make it work. Different games use different mechanics to create totally different experiences.
