Cool Facts
Hanging from fabric. Aerial silk performers climb and move on long pieces of special fabric that hang from above. They wrap the fabric around their bodies to create amazing positions, like spinning cocoons or dramatic drops through the air.
Training and strength. Aerial silks is one of the hardest circus arts because performers need super strong muscles, incredible flexibility, and lots of courage. They practice for years to master the moves and stay safe without safety lines.
Grip and friction. To prevent slipping, performers sometimes rub rosin (a sticky powder) on their hands and feet so they can grip the fabric better. This extra grip helps them hold their body weight and pull off amazing tricks.
Endless possibilities. The fabric can be used to wrap, suspend, swing, and spiral the performer's body into countless different shapes and poses. Some silks are two separate pieces, while others are folded into loops, giving performers different ways to create their art.
Grace and beauty. Beyond just being strong, aerial silk performers need grace and style to make their movements look beautiful and flowing. They perform stories and emotions while defying gravity, making it both an athletic and artistic challenge.
