Waves make sounds. Synthesizers create sounds by generating different types of waves, like sine waves, square waves, and sawtooth waves. Each wave shape sounds different, so musicians can pick the one they want to start with.

Filters shape tone. Once a wave is created, filters can make it brighter or darker by cutting or boosting certain frequencies. It's like adjusting the treble and bass on a speaker to make music sound exactly how you want it.

Envelopes control feeling. Envelopes let musicians control how a note begins, how long it lasts, and how it fades away. A quick, punchy attack sounds different from a slow, smooth fade, and this makes music feel more alive.

Many ways to play. You can play a synthesizer with a keyboard, but you can also control it with sequencers, computers, or other instruments. Many synthesizers talk to each other using a system called MIDI, which is like a musical language between machines.

Endless sound creation. By combining different waves, filters, and envelopes, synthesizers can create sounds that don't exist in nature, from alien sci-fi beeps to smooth, warm tones that feel like real instruments.
