Three parts combined. A sphinx has a human head for thinking, a lion's muscular body for power, and eagle wings for flight. This mix of three different creatures makes the sphinx super special in mythology.

Ancient Egyptian icon. The most famous sphinx is the Great Sphinx of Giza in Egypt, built thousands of years ago. It's one of the biggest statues in the world and has guarded Egypt's pyramids for over 4,500 years.

A symbol of mystery. In ancient stories, sphinxes were often guardians of sacred places or asked riddles to test people's wisdom. If you couldn't solve the riddle, bad things happened, so they represented both protection and danger.

Different in each culture. While Egyptian sphinxes are lion-bodied, Greek sphinxes and those in other cultures sometimes had different animal bodies. This shows how different peoples around the world created their own versions of this awesome creature.
