Garter Snake

Tiny but tough. Garter snakes are small to medium-sized snakes, making them one of the smallest snake species around. Despite their size, they're incredibly hardy survivors found almost everywhere from Canada down to Costa Rica.

Speed demons. Garter snakes move super fast and are super active hunters. Their quick movements help them catch their favorite meals of insects, small rodents, and other small creatures.

Everywhere you look. These snakes are native to North and Central America and live in tons of different habitats. You're more likely to spot a garter snake than almost any other snake species in these regions.

City snakes too. Garter snakes are so adaptable that they happily live in gardens, parks, and even cities alongside humans. They don't mind people as much as other snakes do, making them the most commonly seen snakes in many places.

Born live babies. Unlike many snakes that lay eggs, garter snakes give birth to live baby snakes. A mother can have dozens of babies at once, which is pretty amazing.
