Gentoo Penguin

Loud trumpet calls. Gentoo penguins make a variety of sounds, but their most famous call is a loud trumpeting noise they make with their head thrown back. Other penguins can hear this call from far away.

Close penguin cousins. Gentoo penguins are most closely related to two other species called Adélie penguins and Chinstrap penguins. All three are in the same penguin group called Pygoscelis.

Falkland Islands home. Scientists first scientifically described gentoo penguins in 1781 from penguins living in the Falkland Islands. These islands are near Antarctica in the southern ocean.

Sleek swimmers. Gentoo penguins have black and white feathers that help them blend into the ocean and sky as they zoom through the water hunting for fish.
