Dramatic black and white stripes. The Moorish idol has bold vertical black and white bands running across its body, plus a bright yellow snout that makes it look dressed up for a fancy party.

One-of-a-kind family member. This fish is the only species in its entire family, Zanclidae, which means it has no close cousins or relatives alive today.

Lives on Indo-Pacific reefs. You'll find Moorish idols swimming around coral reefs throughout the Indian and Pacific Oceans, where they nibble on small creatures and algae.

Named by explorer travelers. The 'Moorish' part of its name comes from historic traders and explorers who thought its fancy striped pattern looked like decorative Moorish designs from North Africa.

Instantly recognizable shape. Its long, pointed snout and tall dorsal fin make it one of the most distinctive and easy-to-spot fish on a coral reef.
