The Ghana Empire

Ruled for centuries. The Ghana Empire lasted from around the 700s to the 1000s CE, making it one of the longest-lasting kingdoms in West Africa. It controlled a huge area in what is now Mauritania and Mali.

Gold and salt trade. Ghana became incredibly wealthy by controlling the trade routes where gold and salt were bought and sold. People came from far and wide to trade these precious materials, making Ghana the richest empire in the region.

Strong organized government. The empire had a powerful ruler called the king who controlled the military and made sure trade routes stayed safe. This organized system of government helped Ghana stay powerful for so long.

Connected to the wider world. Ghana traded not just with nearby kingdoms but with merchants from North Africa and the Middle East. This made it an important hub where different cultures and ideas came together.

Declined over time. By around the 1000s CE, the Ghana Empire started to lose power as new kingdoms rose up and trade routes changed. Eventually it faded away, but it left a lasting mark on West African history.
