Molten glass bubble. A glassblower dips the end of a metal tube called a blowpipe into a furnace of melted glass that's hotter than 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. Then they blow air through the tube to puff it up like a balloon.
Shaping as you blow. While the glass is still glowing hot and puffy, the glassblower twists, spins, and moves the pipe to shape the bubble into vases, bowls, glasses, or sculptures. It's like sculpting with air and heat combined.
The gaffer leads. The head of a glassblowing workshop is called a gaffer. The gaffer is the most skilled artist who teaches others and creates the most complex and beautiful pieces.
Lampworking uses torches. Some glassblowers use a smaller technique called lampworking, where they heat glass with a torch instead of a big furnace. This lets them make tiny, precise pieces like laboratory tubes and beads.
Speed matters. Glassblowers have to work fast because the glass cools down quickly. If it gets too cool, it becomes too stiff to shape, so timing and practice are everything.
