Cool Facts
Central Banks Love Them. The biggest banks in countries store their gold reserves in standard gold bars called Good Delivery bars, which weigh 400 troy ounces each. These bars are traded between banks and dealers all over the world.
Different Sizes Matter. Gold bars come in many sizes for different purposes. The kilobar weighs exactly 1,000 grams and is popular for trading because it is easier to handle than huge ingots.
Made Two Ways. Large gold bars are created by pouring molten gold into molds, which creates ingots. Smaller bars are made by stamping or minting them from rolled sheets of gold, like creating coins.
Fair Price Premium. Gold bars cost only a tiny bit more than the actual price of the gold inside them, making them great for buying and selling gold as an investment.
Brick or Flat. Most kilobars are flat and simple, but some investors, especially in Europe, prefer their gold bars to look like bricks because they like the shape better.
