Cool Facts
Incredibly fast hunter. The goliath tigerfish can explode through the water at amazing speeds to ambush prey like smaller fish, shrimp, and even birds that dip too low. It's one of the fastest strikers in all of Africa's rivers.
Teeth like daggers. This fish has massive teeth that stick out even when its mouth is closed, and they can grow as long as your pinky finger. These teeth are designed perfectly for gripping slippery prey and tearing into food.
Monster of the Congo. The goliath tigerfish lives in the Congo River Basin and Lake Tanganyika, two of Africa's most powerful waterways. Local people have known about these massive fish for generations, calling them mbenga.
Grows truly giant. These fish can reach over 6 feet long and weigh as much as a small adult human. Their size and strength make them one of the most formidable predators in freshwater Africa.
Striped like a tiger. The goliath tigerfish gets its name from the bold stripes on its body that resemble a tiger's markings. These patterns help it blend in with the dappled light filtering through the river.
