Cool Facts
From the Netherlands. Gouda cheese comes from a country called the Netherlands in Europe, and it's been made there for hundreds of years. The cheese is named after a city in the Netherlands where it was traditionally sold.
Made from cow's milk. Gouda is made by farmers who use milk from cows to create this yellow cheese. The milk is heated, mixed with special ingredients, and then pressed into round wheels.
Gets better with age. When Gouda is brand new, it's soft and stretchy, kind of like mozzarella. As it sits and gets older for months or even years, it becomes harder and crumblier, with a richer, nuttier flavor.
Yellow color. Gouda cheese has a beautiful golden-yellow color that comes naturally from the milk and the way it's made. No artificial dyes are needed to give it that cheerful appearance.
Ranges in richness. Some Gouda is made with less fat to be lighter, while other Gouda is made with more fat to be extra creamy and delicious. You can choose whichever version you like best!
