Green Heron

Tiny but fierce. Green herons are one of the smallest herons in the world, usually just 16 to 18 inches tall. Despite their small size, they are excellent hunters that catch fish, frogs, and insects with incredible patience.

Tool-using fisher. Green herons are one of the few bird species known to use tools. They drop bread, insects, or other small objects into the water to attract fish, then snap them up when the fish come to investigate.

Greenish plumage. Their name comes from their greenish and bluish-gray feathers that help them blend into trees and reeds near the water. This camouflage makes them hard to spot even when they are hunting right in front of you.

Platform nest builders. Green herons build loose, flat nests made of sticks in trees or shrubs, usually near water. They often reuse the same nest year after year, adding new branches to keep it strong.

Found in warm places. These herons live across North and Central America in marshes, swamps, ponds, and mangrove forests where they can find plenty of water and food.
