Cool Facts
Floppy ear fins. The dumbo octopus gets its name from those two big, ear-like fins sticking out from the sides of its head, just like the famous flying elephant from the Disney movie.
Lives in the deep. These octopuses live in the super dark depths of the ocean where almost no light reaches, making them some of the strangest animals on Earth.
Soft and wiggly. The dumbo octopus has a squishy, jelly-like body that lets it squeeze and move through the crushing water pressure where other animals couldn't survive.
Special swimming style. Instead of shooting water out to zoom backward like other octopuses do, dumbo octopuses gently flap their fins to float and drift through the water, using less energy.
Tiny ocean food. These little hunters catch small crustaceans, worms, and other microscopic sea creatures to eat, usually living for about 3 to 5 years.
