Cool Facts
Biggest falcon ever. The gyrfalcon is the largest species in the entire falcon family, making it an absolute powerhouse of a predator. These birds are built for hunting in harsh Arctic environments where smaller raptors couldn't survive.
Arctic home. Gyrfalcons breed on frozen tundra and Arctic coasts in northern North America and Siberia, where they stay put most of the year as residents. Some wander farther south in winter when food gets scarce in their icy homelands.
Colorful disguises. Depending on where a gyrfalcon lives, its feathers can range from pure white to dark grey-brown, and everything in between. Scientists call these different color versions 'morphs,' which help the birds blend in with their snowy or rocky surroundings.
Girls are bigger. Female gyrfalcons are much larger than males, a trait called sexual dimorphism that shows up in many falcon species. This size difference helps them take on different hunting roles in the family.
