Master slime makers. Hagfish can release enormous amounts of sticky slime from glands in their skin to confuse predators and help them escape. A single hagfish can produce enough slime to fill a bucket in seconds.

Skull but no spine. Hagfish are the only living animals with a real skull but no actual backbone, making them one of nature's strangest fish. They do have some tiny, simple vertebrae, but nothing like the spines in most other fish.

No jaw, no teeth. Instead of a mouth with jaws, hagfish have a sucker-like opening and a tongue-like structure with tooth-like parts that help them bore into dead fish and eat from the inside out.

Deep sea hunters. Hagfish live on the ocean floor in deep, cold water where they hunt smaller animals and feast on dead fish that sink down from above.

Super sniffers. Hagfish have an amazing sense of smell that helps them find dead animals in the dark depths of the ocean, even from very far away.
