Head and handle. A hammer has two main parts: a heavy head made of metal and a long handle that acts like a lever. When you swing it, the handle builds up speed and power, so the head hits hard without you having to be super strong.

Ancient invention. Humans have been using hammers for over 2 million years, starting with simple rocks tied to sticks. Hammers are one of our oldest and most useful tools, used by nearly every civilization.

Many different jobs. Carpenters use hammers to drive nails, blacksmiths use them to shape hot metal, musicians use them to strike drums and bells, and geologists use special hammers to break rocks and collect samples.

Clever lever design. The long handle of a hammer works like a lever that multiplies your strength. By swinging it in a circle, you can make the head move very fast and hit with far more force than your arm alone could deliver.

Perfect balance matters. A good hammer has its weight balanced carefully so it's easy to control and swing smoothly. Too light and it won't do the job, but too heavy and your arm will get tired quickly.
