Cutting the grain. Reaping means cutting down mature crops like wheat or barley using tools such as scythes and sickles, or on big farms, huge machines called combine harvesters that do all the work at once.

Hard physical work. On small farms without much machinery, harvest time is the most exhausting part of the whole year because workers have to gather all the ripe plants by hand before they spoil.

Machines do the job. Big modern farms use specialized harvesting equipment with conveyor belts that gently pick up plants and transport them, which is way faster and easier than doing it by hand.

Cleaning and packing. After crops are cut, farmers don't just stop there, they also wash, sort, pack, and cool the food to keep it fresh before sending it to stores or markets.

Getting faster. Automation has made both planting seeds and harvesting crops much more efficient over time, so farms can produce more food with less manual labor.
