Heart of the home. For thousands of years, the hearth was the most important part of any house. Families gathered around it to cook food, stay warm, and spend time together, making it the center of family life.

Built from stone. Hearths are usually made from sturdy materials like brick or stone that can withstand high heat from fires without cracking or catching ablaze.

Symbol of home itself. The hearth became so important that people started using the phrase 'hearth and home' to mean family and household, and the idea of 'keeping home fires burning' became a way to talk about family bonds.

Changed by invention. When central heating and kitchen stoves were invented, hearths became less necessary for survival, so fewer modern homes have them, though many people still enjoy having one for warmth and coziness.

Cooking and warmth. A single hearth could do double duty, providing both a place to cook meals and a source of heat to warm the entire home during cold months.
