Heraldry: The Art of Coats of Arms

Shields with stories. A coat of arms is a special design placed on a shield that belongs to a family, person, or place. These designs use pictures, colors, and patterns that all have meaning, like how a lion might mean courage or a crown might mean power.

Kings used heraldry. Long ago, kings and nobles needed ways to show who they were in battles and tournaments when they wore full armor. Heraldry let them display their family's symbol on shields, banners, and helmets so everyone would recognize them.

A fancy language. Heraldry has its own special way of describing designs called a blazon. Instead of just saying 'red shield with three gold lions,' a heraldic expert might say 'Gules, three lions passant guardant Or' to be super precise about every detail.

Colors with meaning. Different colors in heraldry have special meanings. Red can stand for bravery, blue for loyalty, gold for wealth and generosity, and green for hope and growth.

Animals as symbols. Heraldic designs often feature animals like lions, eagles, and dragons because each animal represented different qualities that families wanted to show off, like strength, freedom, or fierceness.
