Hoatzin

Eats like a cow. Unlike almost all other birds, hoatzins are vegetarians that eat only leaves, seeds, and fruit. They have a special large crop (a pouch in their throat) like cows do, which helps them digest all those plants.

Smells absolutely terrible. Hoatzins have such a distinctive stinky smell that locals call them by names meaning 'stinkbird.' Scientists think the smell comes from the way they digest leaves, kind of like how cows burp methane.

Baby has secret weapons. Baby hoatzins have two claws on their wings, which is super rare for modern birds. If a predator attacks, the chicks drop into the water and hide, then climb back up using these claws to grip branches.

Lives in soggy jungles. Hoatzins live in the swamps, flooded forests, and mangrove wetlands of the Amazon and Orinoco river basins in South America. They're excellent swimmers and rarely leave the water's edge.

A mystery to scientists. The hoatzin is so unusual that even experts argue about where it belongs on the bird family tree. It's the only living member of its entire family, making it a true living fossil.
