Light waves get frozen. Holography works by recording the actual waves of light bouncing off an object. When you shine that recording with light again, the waves recreate themselves and your eyes see a full 3D picture floating in space.
Not just for fun. While holograms are famous for creating cool 3D images (like on credit cards), scientists use holography for serious work too. They use it to store huge amounts of computer data, look at tiny things with special microscopes, and measure things with incredible precision.
Any wave works. Holography isn't limited to light. In theory, you could make holograms with sound waves, water waves, or even other types of energy. Scientists have experimented with many different kinds of waves.
The magic ingredient. Holography needs something called a laser because laser light is perfectly organized and all the same color. Regular light is too jumbled and mixed up to create the detailed recordings that make holograms work.
Recording both sides. Regular cameras only capture brightness and color. Holography is special because it captures both the brightness of light AND the direction it's traveling, which is what lets you see depth and 3D shapes.
