Metal protection gear. A horseshoe is a curved piece of metal that gets attached to the bottom of a horse's hoof, kind of like how you wear shoes to protect your feet.

Nailed in place. The horseshoe is usually nailed through the outer part of the hoof wall, which is similar to your toenail and doesn't have any feeling, so it doesn't hurt the horse.

Stops hoof wear. Without horseshoes, a horse's hooves would wear down too quickly, especially when the horse works hard, travels long distances, or walks on rough ground.

Glued option too. Sometimes instead of nailing, farriers can glue horseshoes onto hooves, which is another way to protect and keep the hoof healthy.
